Tricky Treats! What is the Worst Halloween Candy for your Teeth?

Halloween can be a fun, enjoyable time for families. After the fun is over, we want to encourage you to think carefully about which candy you consume. Some candy has a much more negative effect on your teeth than others. So which ones should you avoid?

STICKY CANDY

Anything sticky, such as Tootsie Rolls, caramels, and popcorn balls, are the absolute worst for your teeth. They tend to stay on your teeth longer, creating a longer exposure period for your teeth. Eating sticky candies frequently result in more cavities in the long run.

HARD CANDY

Hard candy can result in negative effects for your teeth for the many of the same reasons that sticky candy does. Eating hard candy generally results in sucking on the candy for a long amount of time which results in more exposure for your teeth. More exposure to sugar, means more bacteria and eventually more cavities.

SOUR CANDY

When we eat sour candy, these often result in more acidity in our mouths. More acidity means more of a breakdown of enamel resulting in more cavities in the long run. It’s best to eat these infrequently at best.

Halloween is a good time to consider oral health, but oral health should be on the radar for the rest of the year as well. Encourage your children to brush twice a day and floss daily for the best dental hygiene.
